The Counselling Services

Days :  Tuesday & Thursday

Timings : 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m.

A number of students were referred for counselling from Standard I to IX.

Various factors seemed to be contributing and affecting the children.

Some exhibited behavioural issues such as excessive talking or personal & relationship problem as in being fearful.

In some cases this could be attributed to faulty parenting and resorting to autocratic measures in raising the children.  In rare cases the child was not given time to play during the entire course of the week leading him to being distracted in class.

It was also observed that factors like being raised by one parent or lack of time and communication with children and influence of media played a role in influencing the children in inappropriate ways.

In some cases it seemed that the students feared the teacher and hence would remain silent and withdrawn in class and do mischief behind the scenes.

Children who exhibited academic difficulty were screened to check if it was genuine learning difficulty or emotional issues affecting the academic performance of the student.  Some out of these were sent for testing and diagnosed as learning disabled or faces difficulty due to language barrier.

An attention deficit hyperactivity disorder – ADHD child also faced problems with the curriculum due to limited attention span and hyperactivity.  The students parents have been asked to see a psychiatrist and give medication as per the treatment.  Relevant issues were discussed with the parents and tips were given on managing them at home more effectively.  However the student would benefit to a great extent with medication.

Lack of interest or fear of stigma on the part of the parent also has its impact on the child as it leads to avoidance or delay of necessary measures in the interest of the child.

The parents of all children have been met up with and parenting tips given as per the requirement.

Slow learners and children with learning difficulty have been advised to go in for remediation.

In some cases teachers need to show more sensitivity to the children and refrain from labeling as this may prove to be detrimental to the student’s development.

An Effective Parenting session was organized by the PTA in February 2007 for parents of students in II, III, V and VI.

I thank you for giving me the opportunity to work in your esteemed institution.

I look forward for the same.
